Are you a tenured associate wondering whether it's time to go up for full? A thread of thoughts.

Full profs, please chime in. 1/N
Schools and departments vary much more on this transition than on tenure.

Look at CVs in your field, dept, uni. What's typical time between associate and full? From PhD to full? 2/N
Every case I have seen involved an assoc asking to come up for full. No one is going to tap you on the shoulder. 3/N
Chair/dean may discourage you. It costs them time, effort, and money. It's your choice, not theirs, whether you go for it. 4/N
You MUST be prepared to walk if they turn you down for promotion. Think through what you'd do, so lurking fear doesn't weaken your resolve. 5/N
In my experience, bar for promotion to full even fuzzier than for tenure.

If you're producing, you're fine. Does not need to be at same pace as pre-tenure. 6/N
This is the time for a BIG raise. Most growth occurs at these transitions.

I constructed an individual-level panel of UM faculty salaries, and ran fixed effect regressions with transition dummies, to see this. 7/N
For that big raise you need outside interest. For me, a collection of e-mails asking me to apply for jobs was enough for UM to trigger a "pre-emptive" counter-offer. YMMV. 8/N
