a lil' thread on how publications can get things so wrong when they lift content off social media, print lies, then it gets picked up by other publications, and repeated till fiction is accepted as 'fact'
so, @joonji posted a status update on her facebook page and i commented. silly me, i thought the conversation was amongst facebook acquaintances. unbeknownst to both joonji and i, someone was watching 👀
apparently @DrumMagazine content producer @strangefruitza aka qhama dayile decided to make a meal out of it and write an article about it, using her imagination by adding in lies...
truth is, my son is 13. i had him at 26. i was never pregnant at 19. my friends were around but our worlds were just suddenly very different. anyway, i wrote to @strangefruitza's @DrumMagazine editor to ask for a retraction or apology...
i got a prompt & satisfactory response from @charlenerolls. i have no record of @strangefruitza calling me. i would have expected a text from her for a comment. dololo. i declined charlene's offer for a follow up interview. i didn't want to chat to qhama anyway... i mean 🤷🏽
now here is where it gets juicy... grab some 🍿! other indolent & unprofessional publications have picked up the story from @DrumMagazine and have been adding aromat to the story... enter @celebgossipZA @BonaMag @People_SA 👎🏽👎🏽👎🏽
guys, i'm aware that this particular story isn't the end of the world, but it just goes to show that some of our publications aren't trustworthy sources of info. not ONE journo bothered to contact me. @BonaMag even had the audacity to tag me, as if it's all true 😕
this isn't the first time it's happened either, and i know other personalities have their own stories. i am grateful for twitter for this reason; allowing me a platform to speak directly to people. thanks for listening to my TEDtalk 👊🏽
minutes after i posted this thread i recieved a call from a number i didn't recognise. surprise! it was @DrumMagazine. fancy them getting hold of me so easily 👀 i was asked to please delete a screengrab of a tweet @strangefruitza had posted minutes before, which i did...
i was told that the journalist's now deleted tweet below wasn't about me, even though i believed it was (still do). i was asked to delete in exchange for an apology they would post today on twitter. @BonaMag & @People_SA have apologised. crickets from @DrumMagazine 🙃
so, how's about that apology you promised me yesterday @DrumMagazine? not that there's much value in it now, but hey... 🤷🏽‍♀️
