I foolishly went against my inclination & am watching The Shallows.
It’s shit.
Like if anything about it was remotely believable, cool...
But it’s not.
For one thing she gets a wound from a shark early on which simply could not be from the shark “hunting” her...
Secondly, great whites do not leap out of the water in Mexico to get their prey.

She was surfing in this water, ends up on a rock.... late afternoon.... the tide only comes in to wash her off the following evening after she got there??
Miracle of miracles, the giant glorious (Durban stylee) waves have been absent all along since she got onto the rock. You know, the waves she had been surfing only moments before...
She appeared to think standing on a whale carcass would be better from an avoiding sharks perspective. Wow...
She’s now on a bouy.
Also we are well into like day 3 here & this fucking shark is still circling... this giant hungry great white! Must be running on empty.
Oh she got away from it first time because the corals “sting like jellyfish” so it moved off, right... then to get from her rock to her bouy, she swam through a convenient jellyfish storm.
I’m no expert, but unless those jellyfish and corals were using electricity to sting, I have never read anything which suggests that the denticled & slime coated skin of sharks have any vulnerability to nematocysts, but I will try research it.
Who surfs close to a whale carcass? And now she lit the whale carcass oil on the ocean surface and burned the shark with a flare. Is that even possible?
The shark has not given up. In fact, now it seems retributive.
Unfortunately she lived, killing the shark in a fantasy action so outrageous it would be perfectly placed in Jackson’s The Hobbit films.
Surely films like this are no longer fashionable in the modern world, where we should understand more about sharks and their threatened place in the ecosystem? You would hope so, but no...
And I have not even mentioned the cleanness of her shark bite which categorically not from the bad dude in this film nor any other shark, unless the cookie cutter shark is branching out into "nasty but clean edged angular cutting" also.
She STITCHED here non shark shark bite using her earrings and pendant, I am not even kidding. Two earrings and a pendant.
Either way, it was not a shark bite wound.
Thank goodness for that gorgeous bun wearing long haired Hispanic Hero. She should definitely marry him.
She's so awesome she did her own mouth to mouth and coughed up all the water & started breathing herself after what felt like 3.7 hours.
If nothing else, it made me learn more about.... stinging corals and Jellyfish and how they don't appear to offend sharks. (Source William B Diggers PhD, from Noaa.gov)
So, can anyone tell me? What is maximum velocity in sea water, presuming we weren't buoyant due it internal fat and air?
