.@usatoday gathered records from thousands of immigration prosecutions filed since the start of the Trump administration's zero tolerance push. The government is separating families to secure convictions that seldom carry meaningful penalties.
President Trump and DOJ said today that the zero-tolerance prosecutions will continue. But we found that the practice at the border today was somewhat different.

There's now a not-quite-so-secret D.C. Cir. opinion in the mystery Mueller grand jury case.
Whoever the mystery company is, it's been ordered to pay $50,000 a day in fines until it complies with the grand jury subpoena. But the accrual is stayed while appeals are pending.
Whatever the mystery company is, it's conducting "general commercial activity in the U.S."

Lawyers for one of the Russian companies charged over election meddling continue to file peevish things in court, this time about how unhappy the judge seemed to be about previous peevish filings ->
The lawyers say they've been getting threats ever since the judge faulted them for unprofessional behavior. Some were "whipped into their frenzy by a cable television entertainer unknown to undersigned counsel named Rachel @Maddow."

The catastrophe unfolding at the border is ENTIRELY on TRUMP's shoulders. He has demonized the poor, the uneducated, the desperate, the foreign, the brown, the black. To the point that his supporters are able to defend crimes of humanity against them and say THEY DESERVE IT.
If you can defend this calamity, you have truly lost your ability to reason and your soul. And are that much closer to being like the "good Germans" who looked the other way while their government committed atrocities against "other" people.

NEW: I just spoke with the former head of US Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) – He tells me that he expects hundreds of separated children will never be reunited with their parents. They will be lost in the system. Orphaned by the US Govt'.
He says that during his time at ICE there were rare cases where children could not be reunited with their parents. Separation becomes permanent. This was *before* Trump’s policy that has so far separated 2300+ children from their parents.
He adds there are two separate legal tracks for children and adult migrants who are detained. Adults can be deported within weeks to their home countries, children may be left in the US for years in foster care or with relatives.
