Big Fourth Amendment case decided today - read the ruling at supremecourt.gov/opinions/17pdf…
The Court ruled 5-4 that police need a warrant to access cell phone location records
But even the majority stresses today's ruling is narrow in scope
But writing for the minority, Justice Kennedy disputes the 'narrow' assertion

VP Pence now in meeting just off the House floor in Speaker Ryan's ceremonial office. Photos not allowed. Lots of security. Lots of reporters.
Secret Service seems especially skittish outside Pence meeting. We have been specifically warned not to push too closely for comment upon departure. Normally Pence walks by us without any issue.
Pence, Kushner, Mulvaney leave without comment. Meadows says talks are 'ongoing'

Big news out of Washington state this morning: The state's death penalty law has been struck down as unconstitutional and all current death sentences (eight, I believe) converted to life in prison.

I’m spending a lot of time reviewing Judge Kavanaugh’s rulings to see if he has the temperament and wisdom—and whether he has shown the independence needed of our next #SupremeCourt Justice. Very disappointed by what I’m seeing:
He disagreed with, and wrote a dissent against, a court ruling that the punishment for entering this country illegally cannot be “forcing a child to have a baby”
His opinion would have allowed the government to use delay tactics to prevent women and girls from controlling what happens to their own body. Or, in other words, he drafted a (losing) legal argument that would have forced a child to have a baby acludc.org/sites/default/…

Some really good news, for once: SCOTUS just held in Carpenter v US that police need a warrant to get cell phone location logs. The decision is thoughtful and deeply understands why continuous logs of someone's location are sensitive.

The Court's ruling is narrow and limited to the specific facts of this case. While in some circumstances, the baker might be required to bake the cake, the Court held here that the Colorado Civil Rights Commission did not apply the law neutrally.
"The neutral and respectful consideration to which Phillips was entitled was compromised here, however. The Civil Rights Commission’s treatment of his case has some elements of a clear and impermissible hostility toward the sincere religious beliefs that motivated his objection."
