Donald Trump is not a good person. He lies carelessly and continuously. It is not true that illegal aliens commit a disproportionate amount of crime. Border crossings have not reached crisis proportions; they are way down.
His use of the word ‘infest’, and his rant about rapists are deeply disturbing and telegraph racist tendencies. It’s a problem. The recent fiasco with separated families was careless to a level that amounts to wickedness.
But the man is not Hitler. He has no deep abiding plan of conquest and genocide. In fact, as morality goes, he ranks with JFK, Johnson, Nixon, and Bill Clinton. Bad. But not Hitler. Hitler was in a different category.
My policy with Trump is to applaud and defend him when he does good things. Criticize him when he does bad things. And wait for the next election.
Our founders understood that people like Trump would become president. So they set up the system so that even the president would be severely limited in power. That system has worked out pretty well. It has kept us safe from autocratic designs.
The media know this. It’s their job to know it. But they love the turmoil and outrage and clicks they get from stirring things up. It’s irresponsible and reprehensible because it normalizes and diminishes the significance of the holocaust.
