Just now, at Washington DC’s Reagan National Airport, my taxi driver noted that the driver of this pictured car had refused a blind woman to board with her seeing-eye dog (insisting to put the dog in the trunk). “You cannot treat people like that,” he said.

Thread 1/6
“That is someone’s mother or grandmother. She needs the dog to see,” pleading her case. He cited the rules of taxi drivers and then reported the driver. “He should not be allowed to drive anyone, if he does not drive everyone.”

Thread 2/6
Once on the road, he apologized that his Arabic accent may be hard for me to understand, having recently immigrated from Morocco. I assured him that his English is far, far better than my Arabic. He laughed, politely.

Thread 3/6
“99% of all people are kind. Many people have helped me in America. There are good people,” he assured me.

(He seemed concerned that the one taxi driver who would not drive the woman with her seeing-eye dog might bias my opinion of others.)

Thread 4/6
When we arrived, he checked to make sure I hadn’t forgotten anything.

“Someday, we will all find a way to get along and be kind to each other, inshallah [God willing].”

This man gave me more than a ride. He gave me hope. All for the bargain cost of a $9.60 cab fee.

Thread 5/6
P.S. The next taxi driver in line gladly gave the woman and her seeing-eye dog a ride (with no one in the trunk).

Perhaps, my new friend’s faith in humanity is correct.
