Fox News told on themselves this afternoon.
I still think about this moment—almost ten years ago now—between @jaketapper and Robert Gibbs a lot. Gibbs argues the Obama position that Fox News is not a real news org, and Tapper defends it as a “sister organization” of legit outlets. It’s vexing. theatlantic.com/entertainment/…
Analytically, Gibbs was correct, and Tapper seriously misjudged the nature of the Fox News enterprise, imo. A mountain of evidence bears that out, and only wee little Shep Smith stands on the other side of the scale.
But as a matter of advocacy, adopting the Gibbs approach puts one on the same plane as Fox. Now we’re both out there checking outlets for “ideological bent.” How is an unpersuaded juror to differentiate between Fox’s behavior in the world and ours? It’s an insidious problem.

Kind of hilariously the Associated Press has been sending Erik Wemple factually false statements about its fact check tweet all day.
(The parties *had* found common ground, which is why the senate passed its funding bills with a voice vote late last year. Then Trump panicked and fled the agreement.)
(Also, as we all know but it’s impolite to acknowledge, the tweet was intended to express something much more meatheaded)

This misrepresents Bari Weiss’s column as well as the New York Times subscribers and readers who have criticized it.

Weiss’s column isn’t a travelogue about why she recommends Australian hotels to other tourists. It’s a disquisition on Australian society commending it as somehow uniquely free of the ills of the modern world, and it’s ignorant of what happened in Australia while she was there.

This also needs context. More people are harmed by a federal government shutdown than federal employees. Native American communities, in particular, are immediately adversely affected. As the shutdown continues, the harms expand and multiply throughout the country’s population.
There are businesses that rely on the federal government as a customer—contractors of all sorts and sizes—and as a landlord—e.g. vendors at national parks. People who own and work for those businesses are harmed by the interruption of their income.
Scientists missing their grant funds, journalists who can’t access public records, inventors who can’t get their patents, entrepreneurs who can’t get business licenses ... This bit of context is, in all likelihood, barely scratching the surface of harms flowing from the shutdown.

I got a copy when it came out but went ahead and got more when the book came out. I've seen these plays live and they're breathtaking and I love them and in honor of this sale I'm going to go off for a while with a list of Mormon Lit recommendations and reasons I like each.
I'll start with these plays. @mel_leilani's films (Freetown and Jane & Emma) are more widely known and are both important milestones in Mormon cinema. But Mel is at her very best writing for the intimacy of the stage.

I went to SCAD, I loved it, but mostly for the people I met, and being around like-minded artists and having iron sharpen iron. This was nearly ten years ago now, it was a lot different then. At this point, I wouldn't really recommend art school unless you can safely afford it.
By which I mean, it is NOT worth putting yourself into years and years of debt for. There are now all sorts of options and studies out there for learning all the stuff I went to classes for. The discipline helped me, but it is by NO means required.
Like, most of the stuff I learned in SEQA is... frankly in Scott McCloud's books. So much of learning about SEQA is reading things with a critical eye and reading A LOT. All genres, all styles, to figure out what speaks to you.

Some McCarthy defenders are sliding into my mentions, so let me briefly address these two pretty standard McCarthyite talking points.
One, on Venona: Yes, Soviet intelligence had actively penetrated parts of the American government in the 1940s and 1950s.

The evidence is pretty conclusive that Harry Dexter White, Alger Hiss, Klaus Fuchs, Julius Rosenberg, and others passed info to the Soviets.
The problem is that McCarthy did not "expose" *ANY* of those spies or their activities. Nor, for that matter, did other, McCarthy-like investigators like California's Jack Tenney, who helmed the state HUAC equivalent in the 1940s.

I'm going to tell you a little back story on my latest essay. As you may or may not know, in my latest essay I advocate scrapping the entire recent United States Constitution, the one ratified in 1789. 1/X
2. And writing a new one. I write out a rough draft for the new one as part of the essay, and give some reasons why I think we need to replace the old one.
3. By the way, you may notice I speak of the recent Constitution in the past tense. Not by the wildest stretch of the imagination is that document in force today, December 17th, 2017.

Some thoughts on the debate between Coates and Cornel West, as someone who had the privilege to study with the latter.
I think a lot of folks misunderstand Dr. West’s position because they don’t put themselves in his way of seeing the world. Because for years Dr. West has been very consistent with his critiques of #Obama, #neoliberalism, and #internationalism
West sees the world through an #internationalist matrix of power. That means that, for him, understanding #WhiteSupremacy, for example, isn’t just about understanding individual #racist encounters in the US but understanding *policies* that disenfranchise non-white folk.
