Samba TV, a service for personalized TV recommendations, harvests second-by-second viewing data from 13.5 million #SmartTVs in the US, at individual level, largely without the full knowledge of consumers.

What the NYT article doesn't mention is that Samba TV has a partnership with the large consumer data broker Acxiom. This is from a slide deck about Acxiom's LiveRamp 'IdentityLink Data Store' from 2016.

Samba TV is introduced as a "new data spotlight" for "data buyers".

Wow, just came across this 2017 annual report by the data company @Nielsen. It mentions @facebook as a "third party data enrichment provider" (!) since 2010.

As far as I see, this partnership wasn't mentioned during any of the parliamentary FB hearings:

So:

- What does it mean when Facebook is a "data enrichment provider"?
- Which (personal) data did Facebook share with Nielsen and vice versa?
- How exactly does Nielsen match "audience data from over 9.5 billion unique device IDs" to "over 350 million unique user profiles"?

So, MasterCard sells purchase data to Google and others. Both are not open about it at all.

My take: exploiting knowledge based on combining/matching *individual-level* data = systems of consumer mass surveillance, whether 'double-blind encryption' or not bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

This was an open question since Google stated that they take advantage of "third-party partnerships, which capture approximately 70% of credit and debit card transactions" in the US in May 2017: adwords.googleblog.com/2017/05/poweri…
Of course it's better when they use data mining tech that allows extracting knowledge from data about individual behaviors across firms without disclosing more data as necessary to each other. For pointers about how they might really do it see this thread:

Without going full @GoodwinMJ I do wonder if the remain campaigners realise that every time they argue the Russians stole the referendum many leave voters hear this as them being accused of being stupid to believe propoganda
Similarly arguing that leave voters were misled on the economics by leaders of the leave campaign and that would be different next time isn't particularly convincing, as many don't believe economic forecasts or voted for other reasons anyway
A more interesting place for the Brexit debate to focus might be 'taking back control' - because that reflected a real demand for change, but it is not yet apparent than any real change is proposed by either leavers or remainers

UCC had opportunity to comment on the #Data.Protection & Privacy Bill. The enactment of this law is long overdue. A comprehensive law on the collection & processing personal information gives effect to the right to Privacy envisaged under Article 27(2) of the Constitution
UCC welcome the protections offered by the Bill in terms of export of data, breach notification requirements, data subjects access rights, automated decision making, compensation and the right to be forgotten and provision for financial and penal sanctions for breach of the law.
Distinction between Data collectors & data controllers.
The Bill should however clarify & distinguish Data Collectors, from Data Processors & Data Controllers. Clause 2 is inconsistent with international good practice which provides for two broad categories of Data Controllers

TL;DR: Cambridge Analytica merely harvested Facebook 'likes' data from friends of users of a paid survey app. Loads of data brokers do this already, for online marketing. Not a hack or 'data breach,' although it _was_ a FB ToS violation b/c pretext and disclosed to others.
The media spin on this is absolutely unreal. If you read the actual articles, they solely did something everyone already knew could be done. That's why privacy sites always warned about disabling FB platform access and not installing random survey apps that steal your data.
Even the Guardian itself admits they only harvested friend 'likes'.
