That would have been a slightly more plausible position if Tyler Brule's Monocle hadn't at the same time taken down its ads on Glassdoor for interns.
But we weren't discouraged and we issued proceedings against Monocle in the Employment Tribunal. And Monocle has now sent to @amaliaillgner cheques amounting to her entire minimum wage act claim.
But here's the thing. Tyler Brule's Monocle isn't admitting liability. And it has started advertising - once again - for internships. glassdoor.co.uk/Job/london-mon…
We think this is unlawful. And we want a determination from the Employment Tribunal to this effect. Monocle is desperate to avoid this - and is threatening @amaliaillgner with legal costs (@GoodLawProject is indemnifying her against that threat).
We should also say this. It can be a criminal offence to wilfully neglect to pay the minimum wage. legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1998/39/…
The Government - for reasons unknown - all but ignores the powers Parliament gave to it to bring criminal prosecutions against those who exploit workers by refusing to pay minimum wage. But @GoodLawProject has taken advice on - and intends to - bring a private prosecution.
In 2016 the National Audit Office revealed that over 200,000 individuals were currently employed at below minimum wage. But in seventeen years, Government had only prosecuted ten employers. nao.org.uk/wp-content/upl…
Please watch this space. @amaliaillgner - who has not banked those cheques - is not a woman to be bought off. And we want Tyler Brule's Monocle to learn that it cannot buy off justice in the civil - or if necessary the criminal - courts.
