Allow me a moment to discuss Scott Pruitt for a few tweets.
Pruitt wasn’t a scalp to be collected by the media, as some on the right have suggested. The petty crap that filled headlines was indicative of a larger problem that was bound to come to light eventually.
Slowly, we saw things escalate. It started with inconsequential stuff, but it started becoming real problems. It kept getting worse.
Pruitt was cashing in in small ways. Does it not worry some of you that it had the potential to become bigger ways?
Policy-wise, he wasn’t the worst. He did some good. But he felt entitled to more compensation for it. That’s a problem.
The level of dishonesty is staggering. If an Obama official received some of these headlines, the people defending Pruitt would demand Obama’s head on a platter. This is a man who used the power of the state for his own benefit.
This isn’t a media conspiracy. This is a corrupt official. He deserved to be fired, not be allowed to resign.
Once upon a time, it was considered a good thing to hold ALL public officials accountable. Apparently, in the world of personality cults in office, it’s okay of your guy does it because we’re at war or something.
Sorry. I’m not playing that game. Pruitt deserved to go, and the media isn’t to blame for his corruption.
HOWEVER, let me also remind you of something I’ve said before about Trump. In fact, let’s call it the Trump Rule Of Spotlights.
If you start getting more media attention, positive or negative, than Trump, he will cut you loose. No one takes Trump’s spotlight.
I do not believe for an instant that Pruitt resigned of his own accord. And neither should you.
The message is simple: Trump is the guy in charge, and God help you if you distract from that.
The cabinet members who remain? They aren’t the best folks he hired. They are the ones who kept their heads low. That’s the difference between them.
