very true and poignant but I'm not sure this is as damning as some seem to think. many countries, including US, have long history of lauding the individual athletic contributions of some minorities while simultaneously legislating in ways that are oppositional to their plight
Yes and no. Here in soccer twitter, it's not rare to see some people cheer on a Muslim or African immigrant in the morning and tweet bogus stats about immigrant rape by midday
I'm not saying sports don't play a role in changing stereotypical perceptions. There's just a rosy narrative that if folks know or admire a member of a minority group, they can't also hold bigoted perceptions about that same group. That isn't true.
