WHY DID YOU WRITE THE FIRST BOOK?

I wrote a song several years ago, called "Wicked Girls Saving Ourselves." It's the title song of my second "serious" CD, which got nominated for a Hugo Award. It was about all the girls from portal fantasies who got a raw deal.
When @LeeAHarris at @TorDotComPub asked me for a novella, I thought of that song, and how much I wanted to write the story that went with it, but how much I didn't want to be locked into those unhappy endings. The story followed.

Like most people, I like what I like. I like canned peas and candy corn and hard cheeses. I like plain chicken breasts with a little bit of salt. I like Diet Dr Pepper and I like blueberries and I like popcorn.
I also like things that aren't food! I like My Little Ponies (generation one) and I like ball-jointed dolls and I like collectible pins and I like blind boxes. I like big towels and too many pillows and American Girl doll furniture.
Maybe you like all these things, too! Maybe you like none of these things! Maybe, like most people, you're somewhere in the middle, positive toward some things, negative toward others, neutral toward many.

Every field requires a time to lie fallow. We say "fallow fields" as if that means something useless, but really, it means rest and restoration. It means giving the soil time to heal. Be as kind to yourself as you are to the soil.

I've mentioned DARPA many times... time to dig into this a bit further. DARPA is the acronym for a Pentagon program called Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency created in 1958 (note the timing) in response to Russia's launch of Sputnik, the first artificial Satellite.
The idea was not only the Soviets being ahead in the space race, but the ability to launch a satellite also having the ability to launch intercontinental ballistic missiles, i.e. that they could launch a nuclear weapon that could reach the US.
Politically, Russia's Sputnik became a lightening rod in DC, a way for critics of Eisenhower to really attack the POTUS. Within weeks, panic was spun politically. Just like after 9/11, there was a push for a gov't reorg to increase response to threats. After 9/11 we got DHS.

hello I am processing my outrage at @SenateDems over their failure to vote together and #BlockHaspel and I think I'm going to tweet one fact from the torture report for every Democrat who comes out in support of Haspel is anyone with me on this

A favored tactic of the CIA was to tell detainees they would kill their children or rape their mothers in front of them. (pp.4, 70, 487) This happened in the site Haspel oversaw.

The entire country's budget was passed in 36 minutes without discussion.

Everyone should have collectively lost their minds but, after a short burst of outrage, we swallowed it up whole as if it's normal.

The gormint didn't even think it was necessary to EXPLAIN to us why they did this. We clearly don't deserve answers?
