One last point on this. You want to know another reason this summer is not like 1976? It's not going to be that exceptional.
1976 was four years before I was born, and yet I was still always aware of it. Parents, Grandparents, the media, people talked about it, it was part of the culture. Why? Because it was truly exceptional.
This summer doesn't feel like that. Yes, it's hot and dry and will no doubt set records, but it doesn't stand out in the same way. 16 of the 17 hottest years on record have happened since 2000. This is just a slight amplification of the new normal. It won't enter the folklore.
