Exclusive: Black victims account for the majority of homicides across 50 of the nation’s largest cities.

They are the least likely of any racial group to have their murders result in an arrest, the Washington Post has found. wapo.st/2OhA69b
The Post has mapped more than 50,000 homicides in major American cities over the past decade and found that police have failed to make an arrest in nearly 26,000 killings.

In more than 18,600 of those cases, the victim was black. wapo.st/2mF89M2
The Post’s database has been updated to show a demographic breakdown of each city.

In almost every city surveyed, arrests in killings of black victims were made at lower rates than in homicides involving white victims. wapo.st/2mHIQJp
No major U.S. city had a wider gap in arrest rates for white and black victims than Boston, where the killings of white residents are solved at twice the rate of black victims. wapo.st/2mF89M2
Black Americans are almost a quarter of the population in 52 of the nation’s largest cities, but account for 68 percent of all homicide victims. wapo.st/2mF89M2
In interviews with The Post, more than two dozen police chiefs and homicide unit commanders said they work just as hard to solve black murders but that those investigations are often hampered by reluctant witnesses. wapo.st/2mF89M2
