This was the coup. And the prime minister who was forced into exile - Tom Thabane - we found last night from @manveenrana was supported in exile by....@Arron_banks! So there's a lot of questions here...

NEW: Cambridge Analytica said US voter @profcarroll had no more right to know what data the company held on him than "a Taliban sitting in a cave". Today, it pleads guilty in case brought by Britain's ICO. This is a big deal. US citizens! You have..drum roll..rights to your data!
This has been a long haul for @profcarroll. We first wrote about his battle to get this data here. Today, Cambridge Analytica finally concede that he had a right to this data. Next question: will he actually get it?

As a former journalist and a researcher of the relationship between #news and #socialmedia, I think I understand both sides of the argument over whether tonight's presidential address should be carried live. A few thoughts. #Thread
It's important to look at the decision in itself. Even if you think it violates precedent, and therefore is hypocritical, it may be that the previous decisions were the wrong ones and shouldn't be repeated.
For example, if I used to throw my trash out the car window, arguing that it kept prisoners busy doing litter pickup, that's clearly stupid. If I now know it's dumb and stop doing it, that is a greater good than my being consistent by still doing it.

News Just In: Sanef has approached the Equality Court in Gauteng following a barrage of abusive and dangerous threats against journalists in South Africa.
Sanef is seeking the protection of journalists and ultimately of media freedom as a whole in the wake of sustained intimidation and threats against journalists by EFF leader Julius Malema and his supporters.
Sanef accepts that the political discourse in SA is robust & that the media may legitimately be criticised on public platforms, yet the social media messages by members of the EFF leadership and its supporters has now crossed the boundaries of professional criticism.

Russia and Iran are engaged in disinformation campaigns aimed at US citizens. Twitter just released over 10 million tweets from over 4500 Russian and Iranian accounts engaged in influence operations dating back to 2009. We've analyzed the data. Here's what you need to know...
Russia's influence operations are far-reaching, aimed at a number of countries. This, of course, includes ops aimed at US voters in 2016, but also includes their own people. 58 Russian-language accounts tweeted regional "news" related to Crimea, Syria, and other military action.
44 US-directed local "news" accounts amassed over half a million followers. By using local-sounding news source names, they were able to dupe Americans from *other* regions to share what they thought was authentic news.

Emergency alerts were deployed in the US in 1951 via the Control of Electromagnetic Radiation (CONELRAD) system. Fearing a nuclear attack during the Cold War, radios could be tuned to 2 AM frequencies (see triangles) to receive civil defense information 2/ radiomuseum.org/forumdata/user…
As the threat of attack decreased, the desire to expand such a system for use in local emergency coordination allowed for the better known Emergency Broadcast System (EBS) to replace CONELRAD in 1963. You’ve heard EAS on your radios and TVs. 3/

It is no surprise Twitter targets accounts for “wrong think” or as we on the #Right like to call it “free-think” this is because of two events which are now totally and utterly inextricably linked, #Brexit and #Trump and the Establishment have been rocked to the core. 2/15

Spent some time learning how to use @SlackHQ -- went down some documentation rabbit holes. Here are the 10 most useful things I learned:
1. First - change your mindset: Slack looks like a chat client but it's so much more. Don't think of it as messaging or it will drive you crazy (this is a big risk given the sheer volume and velocity); use it asynch.
2. Learn how to star things: Star your go-to channels, and star messages; this can act as a to-do list for things you revisit later
