Spent some time learning how to use @SlackHQ -- went down some documentation rabbit holes. Here are the 10 most useful things I learned:
1. First - change your mindset: Slack looks like a chat client but it's so much more. Don't think of it as messaging or it will drive you crazy (this is a big risk given the sheer volume and velocity); use it asynch.
2. Learn how to star things: Star your go-to channels, and star messages; this can act as a to-do list for things you revisit later

3. Learn about Posts - these are docs within Slack; they are shareable and editable and searchable (so better than google docs for small notes) - great for meeting notes / longer thoughts

4. Learn about Threads - This is KEY. Unlike chat clients you can reply to specific messages; you can then see only New Threads in the sidebar

5. Combine all of the above:
* Each new thought is a message
* Threads expand / elaborate on messages
* Posts codify / read-out
* New channels for new problems to solve; then archive
6. Get rid of the defaults & Customize your sidebar: Reduce the noise and set up a custom setting; it's worth the time
7. Learn how to pin things: This is key for channels -- e.g., this is what we are doing in this channel; you can then see the pins in the channel description.

8. Use emoji reactions: As per slack "eyes emoji :eyes: to say “I’m looking at this!” or a check mark emoji :white_check_mark: for “all done”."
9. Mac App is WAY better than mobile. (or maybe I'm bad at using it on mobile...)
10. Spend lots of time customizing your notifications otherwise you'll go crazy. E.g., learn about Do Not Disturb get.slack.help/hc/en-us/artic…

tried a new schedule based on this book and it’s been amazing:

1. Appreciate need for deep work
2. Block 3 hours a day for deep work: 9-10:30am and 2-3:30pm. Other times can be used for 1:1s, etc.

Obviously there are exceptions but trying to stick to it. It’s been great...
2/ deepwork = more focus -> better decisions, better feedback + less overall meetings since there's less rework... however,
3/ the main challenge with this approach is getting others to adapt since calendaring is a multi-player game...

blocking full days ("No meeting thursdays") doesn't work since you usually don't need 8 hrs. of focus - you need 8 1-hr blocks with feedback in between, and...

Different work happens in different time horizons - long-term thinking can't happen in short-bursts.

I've been thinking of these as mental time zones 1/

1/ I spent most of the afternoon reading on Github, and for whatever reason was reminded of the many hours I spent digging through developer docs in 2013 when I first went down the bitcoin rabbit hole (and there was barely anything to read but the developer docs)
2/ I have often been asked how I went about learning about it, as the mechanics of it are pretty complex, esp for someone without a background in CS or cryptography. So in case it's useful for anyone out there, here's what my process for learning about most things looks like:
3/ At the beginning, look for basic articles –– Wikipedia or high-level press. You want to create a very rough sketch in your mind about the topic at hand. There will be lots of holes and fuzzy areas, but you can fill those in later.

Here is a story about my flight today back from London after an amazing weekend with my beloved friends and amazing fans at @heroesfanfest London.
. @VirginAtlantic (a killer airline) only has luggage bins on the outside row but not down the middle. So center and window seats have to share overhead luggage bins.
A raging dour woman just got on the flight and gave me a bunch of attitude about the bin over her seat being full, like it belonged to her. Like she purchased it for her personal use. And she’s mad her bags can’t be directly over her sourpuss or a noggin.
