All of them instructed you to send a "self addressed stamped envelope". Which I took to mean I had to write the address on the envelope... myself. 😭😭😭
In retrospect I have had a lot of problems mailing things...
There was also this binder you could buy and subscribe to cards that you inserted. Each set had all these tips for being a teenage girl. I was all about it. My favorite was how to make a face mask from like a banana maybe? Definitely of kitchen stuff.
All I remember is the sketch of the girl had a little curly top knot that I envied with the heat of a thousand suns.

Take me for example:
People - especially white people - have a lot of stories they tell themselves about why I am successful. Most of them boil down to me being charismatic (as opposed to accomplished) and the affirmative action bonus.

Do y'all know how many calls, emails, DMs, texts, referrals I get from white people wanting me to tutor them on something something racism? I have had managers at jobs use their position to try and force me to do it for them, social pressure from colleagues, etc.
I am of the same mind on this issue as I am on drug dealers. If you're good at it then you're too good to be doing it. And if you're bad at it then you're gonna get somebody killed. It's a no-win zone.
If you're wondering I am too good to be doing it.

Whew. I was wholly unprepared for the white middle class woman culture of dieting. I only recently figured out that one never has to actually become thin or "fit", which I have no idea what that means. They must only perform WANTING to become it. Thus, the apps, tips, etc.
There was a template for this in my cultural toolkit. You are supposed to be eternally suspended in almost-thinness. I have no idea how to do that. To perform it, I download food tracking apps and learn to say "whole 30" every second day of the week. That seems to help.
But really the near-obsessive focus on food/eating/dieting/thinness in modern interracial, mixed-class work spaces and social spaces is very, very challenging for me, too.

Okay, let me tell you about Pitch Wars and fees. I grew up poor. P-O-O-R, living in government housing, poor. My family is intergenerationally poor, which is a real fancy way of saying we been poor as dirt since we ran away from the Potato Famine.
We have 0 (ZERO) college graduates. We do have some union plumbers. But most of us have worked service industry jobs and scraped by and made do. I joined the Army to try to break that cycle of poverty. We didn't have the money for college, and I was afraid of loans.
(Borrowing money against money that doesn't even exist yet is fscking terrifying when you're poor.) So, no college for me. I got kicked out of the Army for being queer, and came back to my poor ass life with no prospects. I got a job at the same cafeteria where my aunt & grandma
