I can't help but think that most men would be able to non-harassingly interact with women if only they cared about listening to women's experiences too.

Funny, the men I feel completely safe with? They seem to listen. Huh. Who would have predicted!
In this age of #MeToo, some folks cry, "Oh no, now you've made it unsafe for me to even talk to women!" I've crashed alone on a new friend's couch & shared a tent with two coworkers. Was fine!

The problem isn't #MeToo. It's people who put their desires above others' boundaries.
It's pretty simple. ASK people what they want, AND THEN LISTEN.

That's how you avoid harassnent: learn their boundaries & graciously respect them.

Folks retaliating against #MeToo don't want to listen, or else can't stand the discomfort of realizing they haven't been listening.

So I'm reading "IBM and the Holocaust" for the book club at work (I <3 that my *office* picked this book!).

It is so far from "old news" that it's scary.

Some Nine World's stuff worthy of a read.
One of the reasons why the 9W stuff is interesting to me is partly due to how it all turned out, what they achieved and the hardships they faced and also partly because I could see Kitacon going the same route and facing the same challenges.
Obviously I'm keen to avoid the pitfalls others have made in order to maintain a strong event and team but I can't help be worried about the geek/nerd communities being swallowed up by non caring events worried only about their bottom line.

I met Shyla last year in a meeting. Her father had dreamt of making her a doctor. But his dreams drowned in the sewer he had died in. This is her story. (ruralindiaonline.org/articles/my-mo…)
Ten years later, Shyla is almost close to realising her father’s dream. She is doing her nursing course, and she needs help. As a society that sent her father down the sewers, I think it is our responsibility to see that she becomes a nurse.
When I met her again last month, Shyla was exuding confidence. “I will soon be a nurse and if you need anything, call me over” she told me and i cant wait.
Shyla’s course fee for third year comes close to Rs 1 lakh. I already have someone pledging Rs 10,000.

So I can't help but think about why men like Kavanaugh might genuinely believe they have never assaulted someone, and what it evokes in my mind is what it was like to be a high school girl in the 80s.
I know literally dozens of women who experienced what we now call date rape. We didn't call it that back then--it was called "He didn't stop when I asked him to," and "I kept trying to push him off but he kept telling me to relax, that it would be over soon."
May be in our heads we might have used the word rape, but we rarely said it out loud. We were socialized that it was our responsibility to control him--if we could't stop him, then it was our fault.
