Racism is a dagger at the heart of American democracy. Many white Americans are authoritarian, in favor of military rule and willing to disregard democratic norms because of a fear of loss of status relative to non-whites. My new .@salon

This new research from Steven Miller and Nicholas Davis also shows again that it was not so-called "economic anxiety" that motivated Trump's voters but rather racial authoritarianism.
This also helps to explain why so many Republican voters are comfortable with Trump making America subordinate to Russia. If protecting white Americans' power means jettisoning democracy there are many white right-wing and other Americans who will take this bargain.
To understand Trump's cult-like power and his win in 2016 and likely again in 2020 we must grapple with two important concepts. Treasonous Racism and Racial Authoritarianism.
Those white Americans who are so frightened of losing white privilege and white power in an increasingly diverse and cosmopolitan America live in an upside down world. White Americans will still be the largest group and the most powerful economically, politically and socially.

As Mueller's investigation tightens around Trump and his corrupt administration he will only increase his white racist white supremacist appeals. It will likely not be too long before Trump is chanting white supremacist slogans such as "anti-racism is anti-white".

Stephen Miller, Michael Anton, Steve Bannon, Jeff Session, and yes the king of the cabal, Donald Trump have shown through their actions, words, and policies that they are racists in league with and doing the work of a much larger white supremacist ideology and movement.
And it should be no surprise then that Trump's chief economic adviser is longtime friends with Peter Brimelow, a prominent and open white supremacist.

Political scientist Liliana Mason's research suggests this is a distinct possibility. Her work also shows that yes there is hyper polarization but Republicans are much more hostile to the groups that comprise the Democratic Party than the other way around.
Republicans are extremely cold and hostile towards nonwhites, gays and lesbians, women, and other groups who they identity as part of the Democratic Party. Democrats have much less hostility towards white men, "Christians", rural Americans and the like.

It's gutting. Pain & suffering caused by #racism is a layer of daily fear, misery & danger white people can't imagine, even as they perpetuate it.

This thread tells white people what to do to disrupt racism.

Do it. All whites benefit from racism. Change it.
It's a fact that most white Americans have no black friends, follow no black writers, activists, influencers on social media, read no books by black people.

White people can't disrupt #racism without knowing the breadth/impact of it and how we white people benefit from it.
Thus far not one white person I have asked "name a book by a black writer you've read in the past month or even year" has had an answer.

But I have been blocked for asking the question.

Y'all are proving my points about racism. And underscoring the need to start here, now.
