Wow. Internal documents show Trump’s State Department knowingly lied, ignored warnings from top economic advisers & manipulated data in an attempt to discredit the recent UN report on poverty in America, per @ForeignPolicy. foreignpolicy.com/2018/08/02/int…
The same internal documents also indicate the UN’s report on poverty in America did indeed play a role in motivating the US’s withdrawal from the Human Rights Council earlier this summer.
The same documents show that the State Dept. chose to rely on analysis from the conservative Heritage Foundation OVER THE U.S. CENSUS BUREAU—the agency whose job it is to produce and analyze the federal government’s official poverty data—in its effort to whitewash poverty.
Btw, this was the “senior State Dept. official” leading the response to the UN poverty report (a “former food lobbyist and wine blogger”— you can’t make this stuff up)
Notably, some of the back and forths between State Dept officials & members of the WH Council on Economic Advisers in these documents reveal the CEA may not actually stand by the report it issued a month later declaring poverty in the US “largely over”
Also notable: when @ForeignPolicy sought comment for this story, the WH press office responded for CEA, claiming CEA is “in complete agreement with the economic assessment in the US’s rebuttal to the UN’s Report on Poverty”—which the internal docs themselves show to be a lie.
^ This is how desperate Trump’s White House is to whitewash poverty in America, to justify slashing programs that help families get by—while continuing to lavish tax cuts on the wealthy.
