INCREDIBLE NEWS: Senate lawmakers have reportedly struck a Farm Bill deal that protects SNAP, scrapping the House GOP/Trump plan, which would have taken food assistance away from 2 million Americans. washingtonpost.com/business/econo… #HandsOff
At a time when nearly half of U.S. households don't earn enough to afford basics like food and housing, this is a major victory for families across the country struggling to make ends meet—and a stark reminder that elections matter.
A key takeaway from this Farm Bill fight: it’s not just Social Security and Medicare that Americans love and overwhelmingly don’t want to see cut. Programs like SNAP are immensely popular, too—across party lines.
Case in point: @amprog polling during the Farm Bill debate found that TWO-THIRDS of American voters oppose cuts to nutrition assistance—and a majority would be less likely to vote for a candidate who backs cuts. americanprogress.org/issues/poverty…
@amprog Reminder for context on how evil the House GOP Farm Bill was:

SNAP provides a meager $1.40 per person per meal.

This is what they were trying to take away from struggling families—just months after giving more in tax cuts to the top 1% THAN THE ENTIRE SNAP PROGRAM EVEN COSTS.
@amprog More to come as further details emerge.

But in the meantime, @NancyPelosi & @HouseDemocrats are to be applauded for uniformly saying #HandsOff SNAP in the Farm Bill. Not a single House Dem voted for the GOP plan either time it came up for a vote because of its cruel SNAP cuts.
