This sentiment always brings me back to a John Boehner interview on @MeetThePress in 2011 where he's asked about Trump's birtherism stuff.
David Gregory asks: "Do you not think it’s your responsibility to stand up to that kind of ignorance?"
Boehner says this:

I personally think things might be different right now if Republican leaders had repudiated some of the stuff Trump said in real time. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think about it a lot. Anyway enjoy your day!
