Figure out how this analogy makes sense to somebody and you'll figure out how the collective right-wing brain is broken.
How does one traffic in the exact sort of racial and religious exclusionary bigotry that is the entire reason for being of groups such as the KKK ...

...and *also* join the rest of decent society in the presumption that groups like the KKK are self-evidently bad?
This sort of strange double-think reveals itself consistently and constantly.

A very common manifestation is the "DEMOCRATS were the party of the Confederacy!"

Well, yeah. But *today* you're the ones defending the Confederate monuments and flags and cause. So ...?
There's a lot to unpack here, but I think at the bedrock is the fact that a group like the KKK has become indecent to right-wing people (even while right-wing people express similar views to such groups) because of social approbation.
There has been extended and persistent campaign of telling the truth about groups like the KKK. Which involves exposing their indecency.

We do this in story. Movies, history, museums, novels, etc.

Truth-telling.
Our truth-telling has become so persistent & extended, that it's now a given that a group like the KKK is indecent and bad.

And people—even people who hold similar beliefs to those groups—consider themselves good.

Therefore they are not of this group.

But those they hate are.
I'm going to leave this idea here for now, because it touches on something I've been thinking about for a year that still isn't quite ready to come out of the oven.

But I will say one other thing.
If extended truth-telling about the KKK made it anathema, we can do the same thing with other groups.

We can tell the truth about any group. Any group at all.
Being a part of the KKK didn't used to be political death.

Now—despite vigorous efforts to the contrary—it is, for now at least.

It's not something decent good people are a part of. That's a known fact.

And everybody considers themselves good.
There are groups today, who aren't the KKK, that believe the same thing that the KKK believe. Pretty much exactly.

We should tell the truth about them, persistently and for an extended time, and in story.

We might be surprised what happens.
