While it is funny that 12 racists with expensive hair cuts showed up today, it’s mad dangerous to get to excited by that. Growing up in dc, I can’t tell you the number of klan rallies that either no klansmen came to or featured 8 cowering peckerwoods behind legions of cops
Everyone who showed up to counter protest would laugh, pat ourselves on the back and feel good about beating racism that day. And way too many people, especially us white folk, got comfortable with that, thinking racism was being relegated to the dustbin of history
Obviously, that ain’t how it worked.
Racism is a very pernicious weed, and it’s roots are deep and largely invisible. Knuckle dragging racism out in the open is only a symptom. And as I think we’re hopefully learning, we can’t let that distract us from addressing the bigger virus.
Ultimately, keeping people from saying insane racist shit or marching about like bearded cracker automatons is necessary, but shouldn’t be mistaken for actually fixing the problem, no matter how good it might feel to think so. Lookin at you, fellow white people.
