I've never heard of a "six-round" AR-15 magazine. Does anyone have any idea what the sheriff is talking about here? I seem to recall the perp used 10-round mags. Anyway, mag size only really matters if you're under severe time pressure because somebody is shooting back.
The mass shooters in these school incidents spend a lot of time not shooting (if you total up length of incident, # of rounds fired, and realistic rate of fire for their weapon). Only a fraction of that not-shooting time is reloading, given ~3s for a slow, untrained reload.
To be crystal clear: it's precisely because smaller magazine sizes put you at a disadvantage in a gunfight that cops love mag capacity limits. What organized group of armed humans /doesn't/ want a tactical advantage vs. the rest of the world? It's not about mass shooters.
Per replies to this thread, sheriff is almost certainly talking about a 5-round hunting mag (FL has a five-round limit for hunting: myfwc.com/hunting/regula…). +1 in the chamber makes it six. So 9th deadliest mass shooting in American history was carried out with 5-round mags(!!)
The original AWB and proposed AWB 2.0 all propose to limit mag sizes to 10 rounds, or twice the mag capacity used in Parkland.
I dunno... to me, the news that this kid did one of the deadliest mass shootings in US history with mags that are half the size of what gun controllers want to limit is to, is kinda huge.
I'm gonna guess this was a 10-round mag with a limiter installed, something like this: midwayusa.com/product/456698…

The mag would've been set up this way for hunting purposes, and for whatever reason he didn't bother to change it.
