I think there's going to be something of a revolution in people understanding their cognitive defaults and styles over the next 10 years.
There's already a lot of good information available on the topic — albeit most of it is disconnected, unsynthesized, and not easy to reference or use for self-study and self-analysis.
There's been wide acceptance of things like Myers-Briggs and the Big Five personality traits, and growing usage of things like the Kolbe A Score, but I think there's probably a few dozen "cognitive variables" that aren't really well-mapped, but will be soon.
Things like default reactions to boredom or discomfort, there's certain cognitive baselines and default styles in reacting them. But there's no real way to quickly size up what your defaults are on stuff like that.
Then there's specific edge cases — like ADHD "Hyperfocus" — additudemag.com/understanding-… — just learning the term is very valuable for people who have those patterns.
It's very possible to gradually evolve your default *behaviors*, and likely even possible to adjust your default cognitive baselines/impulses over time through physical fitness, various biochemistry/pharma, and practicing various skills and thinking patterns.
And it's going to be a big deal. There's plenty of kids (and adults) that think they're a screw-up until they get into the right environment. And plenty of top performers that already do excellently, but go to the next level when they really understand how their mind works.
10 years or so. I think society will have made a lot of progress on this over the next 10 years. It's going to help a lot of people immensely. And we're going to wonder why it took so long to figure out.
