Some people will be extremely angry at Len McClusky's rude and broadbrush approach to the Leaders of British Jewry today. Whilst clearly it is inappropriate for a Trade Union leader and major player in civil society, I am not. Here is why:
2/ Len made his comments from a place of wanting to do the something right to deal with antisemitism whilst knowing that considerable numbers of his grassroots supporter base (& that of Jeremy's) are completely bonkers & many are antisemites. Len is weak and won't take them on.
3/ Trade Union politics are fought from the left. When McClusky was first elected he himself was seen as the moderate candidate (yes, that is how barmy Unite is at times). Len's article is about making concessions to reality whilst appeasing his left flank with some fight talk.
4/ The most important thing in today's article was Len following the responsible General Secretaries of GMB, Unison and Usdaw in supporting IHRA in full. The rest of his piece was just fluff to convince his supporters that he hasn't gone soft. (He has a little).
4/ And just like Jeremy, McClusky is at best his on the attack. So he launches into a major tirade against so called Blairites and leaders of the Jewish community. His comfort zone.
5/ So just remember this. Len doing the responsible thing in adopting IHRA will drive the antisemites to call him a sellout. Maybe even a Blairite. He will bring back memories of the Unions taking on the left.
So spare a thought for Len. He did it like a bull in a China shop.
But he did it.
