I signed up for Mastodon yesterday. I... think I signed up for Mastodon. It was incredibly confusing in a way that I'm sure it isn't to longtime users, but it's definitely not off-brand Twitter.
I currently am not using it just because I barely have the energy for Twitter on a good day. At this point I'm setting up various accounts to flee to if the other shoe, whatever it may be, drops with Twitter.
Listen, I stayed on LJ long after everyone abandoned it to the tumbleweeds. I'm to a point where I'm still here only because of the unspoken community infrastructures Twitter *users* have built. If people leave en masse and those crumble.... well.
I'm probably going to stick it out here as long as I can in order to keep in touch with people, while also going back to blogging and maybe a commenter community like back in the day. But I also have so few spoons these days. idk.
This would be an amazing time, btw, for a big RSS feed aggregator to come along, to help us keep up with people as they return to personal sites. I still don't understand why they discontinued Google Reader, it was practically my home page.
The interesting thing is that my med adjustments have helped me get back to writing. But I also wonder if Twitter's general decline over the last few years, has just been so bad for all of us that we'll be happier once we're gone.
I do get that Twitter's always been toxic and threatening for some people; I saw it happen. But I think we also saw it decline across the board once It's About Ethics in Gaming started up and spawned roaming waves of toxicity across all fronts.
I don't want to get into the politics of it, but people have discussed this, it's not me just spitballing. It's sociologically part of how we ended up where we are. And @/jack either allowed it or actively facilitated it. This place is the swamp in Fury Road now.
And the generalized anxiety I already have got a lot worse over the last couple of years. There's a lot of factors, I'm sure. But I think the increasing free-for-all nature of Twitter was one of them.
So: I don't want to leave. I hate pulling up stakes and moving to a new platform; I've had to do it before, it sucks and I know it. We're just going to have to figure something out, I guess.
I neglected to actually say: if/when I do post, it's on the Dreamwidth mirror of my LJ. Until we can figure out the next big community social-media platform, I'll be here, and DW is my home base.
