NEW: The Justice Department alleges in a court filing that Michael Cohen "coordinated with one or more members" of the Trump campaign to pay off two women who claimed to have had affairs with the president.
More: DOJ says Cohen and the National Enquirer coordinated with "one or more members" of Trump's campaign to "deal with negative stories about Individual-1's relationships with women" by buying their stories to silence them.
The charging documents make it pretty clear who "Individual-1" is. (Hint: Trump.)
This is significant. The Justice Department has alleged in court that members of President Trump's campaign participated in a federal crime to buy the silence of two women for the purpose of influencing the 2016 election.
Here's a link to the information, from @usatoday's @big_cases bot, which is obviously following this case ->
This is interesting: Cohen sought reimbursement from "the Company" for his payment to Stormy Daniels. An executive from "the Company" recommended: "Please pay from the Trust. Post to legal expenses."
The description of those payments matches how the president's lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, described how the president had reimbursed Cohen.
Prosecutors also allege that "the Company" falsely accounted for those payments as a retainer for legal services, when they were "not in connection with any legal services he had provided."
DOJ says Cohen billed "the Company" $180,035 for the payment to Stormy Daniels and what he called "tech services." (He also wanted to be reimbursed the $35 wire fee.) Executives "grossed up" the payment to $360,000, then threw in a $60,000 bonus.
Well, one of our stories. We have a lot of stories today.
