I've been asked this a lot - what is the benefit of ranked choice voting?

If you feel like politics keeps pushing far left or far right as candidates differentiate, RCV lets you pick the moderate with the back-up of "not the other one".

Maybe you think of yourself as an independent, moderate, etc, and really don't love either party (but probably like one party less) - you can select me as your first choice, and still have the back up of another candidate if not enough people agree with you.

In this race, folks who like Bruce probably don't like Jared, folks who prefer Jared probably aren't keen on Bruce.

A lot of folks would like (or find less annoying) someone who really isn't a party. With RCV, you can do that! It removes the risk of vote-splitting.

If you find yourself as one of the folks who starts sentences with "I'm an Independent", or "I'm really an Independent, but I registered for the primaries" this election will be the first general election where you can vote for who you like guilt-free!

I'd like to send my big THANK YOU out to everyone today.

I left last week to the men to celebrate or lick wounds.

I started with 2 goals, both accomplished:

✔️ Incumbent no longer making law

✔️ Find a way to make campaigning not suck while getting $ OUT

Final 1st round vote count looks like 16,260; 5.73% of the votes.

I spent <$800 of my own money, accepted no campaign contributions (probably <$750, I rounded up on stamps - I'd rather estimate high).

Bad for the planet, expensive and annoying.

👊Instead we made our own or had signs that could be downloaded, printed on a regular printer, taped in windows, then recycled.

I had no idea how incredibly bad media coverage had become until I ran for office...maybe it's always been bad.

I was an active participant in this mess. I'm sorry.
For all the people who had real, legitimate, interesting, newsworthy stories that I thought were being whiny that they didn't get covered.

I'm sorry. I should have listened. You were right.
For the people I wrote off as nutty when you told me that the way candidates were covered was a viscious circle; polls were free advertising for those who least needed it.

I shouldn't have rolled my eyes or heralded the press's right to cover, forgetting their responsibility.

lot of talk about 'beefs' again, but actually writing down what I think the current DSA "faction fight" is might be insightful so im probably gonna do that right now.
I dont know if the factions even fully realize they're that yet. maybe a quarter of each at best, especially since one is a loose coalition that doesn't exist in a formal sense, just a shared goals and needs sense.
But its become apparent now that we have comms where chapters can talk to each other, that people a.) dont know this, and b.) its more of a thing than i really thought, honestly.

1. I found this map on Twitter recently. It shows what the United States looks like when you blackout the counties in which a majority of voters did not cast a vote in 2016.
2. The map’s creator hoped to demonstrate what he believes to be the problem with the two-party system. So many people didn’t vote, he said, because the parties failed to produce acceptable candidates. To him, this is concrete evidence of party failure.
3. “Anyone who wants to earnestly say the election was ‘stolen by Russia’ needs to explain this map,” wrote @giorgio_montana. “I'm going to go off on a limb & say you don't need poorly-made FB ads to convince ppl not to vote for the 2 least popular politicians in US history.”

So, a real-world story about how Ranked Choice voting by successive elimination (as implemented in San Francisco) is weird.

Many following SF politics saw the initial results for Mayor last night, when only the early vote-by-mail ballots had been counted. Breed was winning.
Many also saw the later updates, late last night and today, with Leno winning. As of this afternoon (Preliminary Report 5), Mark Leno is barely ahead, thanks to RCV. (The election is still wide open, since there are a ton of vote-by-mail ballots still to be counted.)
What hasn't been seen much is the difference between those: the election day ballots. If you count *only* the election day ballots, Breed also wins, with Kim second. The fact that Kim eliminated Leno allows Breed to win by beating Kim; she can't beat Leno in these ballots.

Okay then, I am in a hotel with two weeks worth of groceries for a family of four (really don't ask about my day) but there is wine and I've been putting this off so welcome to this evening's cultural activity! It is a reading of Amy Chua's book Political Tribes! There's wine!
I need a few minutes to breathe and start everything charging and figure out this food situation because ironically I have stuffed this mini fridge to capacity and also have nothing I could actually eat for dinner. There has to be pizza delivery to the motel near nothing right?
For those of you new to my feed, I often do things so you don't have to, and reading books that you should know exist but shouldn't spend time or money on is one of them.

Eventually I will prejudge a book wrongly and feel very chastened but I keep spinning that wheel!

In the America 1930s, a new kind of Christianity was emerging. It was aimed at the wealthy, and was supported by massive companies. The aim was to change Christian meaning.
But it didn't really start to pick up until 'The New Deal ' which was to help to poor.
This new Christianity, you didn't need to read the Bible, but you had attend church.
Now this was only aimed at the rich and middle classes.
The preacher would clearly state, that you having money was a gift from God, and the poor were being punished by God.
Yes, massive chunks from the Bible was ignored, and in fact their Bibles had eradicated Jesus helping the poor.
Being rich and Christian meant you were truly blessed by God. But in reality, it really did create #FakeChristians
