Maybe I'm being blinded by numerology, but Kohlberg's stages and Kegan's stages seem suspiciously correlated.
Nihilism: stage 5 mind with stage <6 morality? "Surfing Dialectics" is hard without a higher moral sense to guide decision-making.
What changes first: stage of mind/self, or stage of moral reasoning?
Looks like @Meaningness beat me to this but came to a different sort of conclusion: if I read correctly, he sees "Universal Principles" as still operating in a Kegan stage 4 mode? I'm not certain I agree, but the concepts are too nebulous for me to tackle. vividness.live/2015/10/12/dev…

Note how in the little Kegan meaning-making diagram, stage 4 stands apart from "the socialized mind".

Is outsider-ness (re: society) an inherent characteristic of stages >3?
Weird to consider that in the 60s and 70s, it took people till their 40s to gain the dialectical insights that we now attempt to feed to college kids.

1/ Please bear with me as I summarize a book by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (MC), author of "Flow", called "The Evolving Self" (1993). I'll do so mostly through quotes, please excuse any gaps. Idea-space coordinates: memes, Modernism, psychology, liberalism.

First, definitions:
2/ A "system" is a set of parts forming a whole. Each system has an "order" ("negentropy"), which is opposed by "chaos" ("entropy").

A system is "complex" if it is "differentiated" & "integrated". This is typically good.
3/ "Differentiation" = "the degree to which a system is composed of parts that differ in structure or function from one another".

"Integration" = "the extent to which the different parts communicate and enhance one another's goals".

underappreciated fact: your ideaspace is bounded more by experience than by intelligence
continuing with ideaspace metaphor: experience broadens your base, while intelligence helps you ascend (to meta)
meta-knowledge is useful predictively but is also fallible. otoh nobody can tell you your experience was in-itself invalid, only the conclusions you draw.

@pnewman8 1/I don't think echo chambers alone produce "us and them" mentalities, I think an echo chamber must first be confronted with an Other in order for this to emerge.
@pnewman8 2/To avoid "us and them", the echo chambers must be porous and well-tended. The adventurous must explore and share their good viewpoints with those who feel threatened. Through sermons, for example.
@pnewman8 3/The problem is if you force someone inside an echo chamber to confront the Other. They either withdraw into "us vs them", or they must battle with nihilism. Too often nihilism wins.

In the spirit of Education, let me do the ignorant generation a favor by showing you how diligently accountable people respond to defamation according to various researches on the subject. It is only when you learn that you become. There’s a difference between growth & swelling.
First thing first, defamation is a civil suit and never bumped up to a criminal act requiring a state of emergency or trumped up charges as crazy as terrorism allegation. The killer herdsmen are free today under some Governor’s payroll. No police statement till tomorrow.
Morally this is wrong but our constitution did not criminalize immorality. People under this admin’s payroll at the BMC Call Objective people who they fear & hate names. Even accuse us of being frauds just because we have refused to swallow their barbiturates under demonic oath.

Those who didn't know the game are starting to realize that to which they are inexorably connected.
