When I was too insular and numb to understand how his words could potentially (and did) affect people's lives, I found Milo moderately amusing on news programmes as a guy bringing vague unpredictability to a stale format.
It doesn't excuse it *at all*, but I assumed everybody was aware that he was just saying anything offensive for attention, and I saw him as a harmless pest. It wasn't until I saw vids of huge crowds unironically cheering his statements that I hated him.
I have made a lot of mistakes like this. I took a lot of things for granted. The biggest part of it is almost certainly white guy privilege, but another part is a feeling of complete isolation from society.
A lot of people in the alt-right are so detached that they genuinely believe that an ethnostate can be built without any ill effect and that campaigning for an ethnostate isn't inciting violence/harassment/general prejudice against minorities.
They think that minorities can just be shipped 'back to their own country' where they will fit in better and live as normal. The media are really bad at tackling the alt-right because they focus on what insincere people like Milo or Hopkins or other trolls are saying.
