X : Did you invent mapping?
Me : Err, no. That was thousands of years ago.
X : I mean business mapping?
Me : I created my form of mapping now known as Wardley Maps, 13 years ago. It's all creative commons.
X : But what is the first business map?
Me : I don't know of any others.
X : But was it the first?
Me : I doubt it. Never forget Sivowitch's Law of Firsts - "Whenever you prove who was first, the harder you look you will find someone else who was more first"
X : So was it the first or wasn't it?
Me : Who cares? Do you find it useful? Live in today.
X: But what if it wasn't first and someone says this was more first?
Me : I'd be like ... great. Where were you hiding it? Is it a map? Is it a better map?
X : But then you wouldn't be first?
Me : Arghhh. I don't care. Never did. I only care if something is useful.
X : But don't you want to have a legacy?
Me : A legacy implies I'll be dead, so I promise you I'll care even less. In any case, anything you do then someone will find a better way. That's progress, that's evolution and it's a good thing. We should celebrate that.
... do you think anyone truly remembers the first person to create a geographical map? No. We've know idea. It's long lost but let us praise that person, whoever they were, and say thank you. I'm sure they don't mind we've forgotten who they are. They're dead.
So celebrate the now, enjoy life, enjoy your family (if you are lucky to have one) and find your passion. Try to make those around you comfortable and happy and don't worry about the trivia of who did what first. There are more important things in life.
X : But I'm interested in history.
Me : Ok, so they are first maps of business as far as I know i.e. I've never found any others that were actually maps. There are probably hundreds of maps out there but I never found any of them. Go dig, indulge your passion.
X : But I'm certain there are lots of things called maps out there.
Me : Most of them are not actually maps. Ok, mine are more Babylonian clay tablet like maps than ordinance survey but at least space has meaning.
X : How do you mean?
Me : It's best I show you.
... to be a map, beyond being visual, context specific (a map of a space not a single fit all) and having components then you need to navigate which means an anchor (North), position relative to the anchor (this is North of that) and consistency of movement (head North)
... most things called "business" maps have no concept of space i.e. take a mind map, you shift a component a bit and it doesn't change the map. Try doing that to an Atlas, say shift Australia a bit ... it's a different map. Space has meaning in maps.
