It is neither smart nor radical. It's a solution in search of a problem. Workers can already buy shares in the companies they work for. That option has always existed. Some make use of it. Some don't.
It's, once again, this Marxist bullshit idea that The Workers are a homogeneous bloc with common interests and a group identity. Dreck. The Working Class is not a thing. It is a Marxist fiction. Worker Smith doesn't have much in common with Worker Jones, let alone Worker Bloggs.
And that's the reason why we don't have more worker-owned companies. It would make sense if all workers wanted X, and all shareholders wanted Y. In that case, yes - it would be true to say that if workers became shareholders, priorities would systematically shift from Y to X. But
...if The Workers DON'T have easily identifiable common interests, and DON'T have a strong group identity, then owning a share in your workplace becomes just an investment like any other. Viewed in those terms, it's a bad investment: all eggs in one basket.
