Wife and I hadn't celebrated our 1st anniversary when we got attacked in 2001. I was at work and a friend popped up over the cube wall and said "2 planes have hit the World Trade Center".
My immediate response was "terrorism" because 1 could have been an awful accident, but 2 was obviously by design.
Someone pulled a TV out of a conference room and used the long cable as a crappy antenna. We all huddled around the screen and watched. We saw both towers crumble to the ground.
Management sent us home because no one could concentrate. Also, some of us had friends and family in those areas. A close relative was on the other side of the Pentagon when the plane hit where his office was.
Could have been worse. God love those guys on flight 93 who said "Let's roll" and gave their lives to prevent a much large loss of life.
It's terrible, horrible, instructive memory, one which I think about every year. But there are good things to focus on on this date as well. This is the wedding anniversary for some friends. @GingyNorth will become a citizen today.
Some people have this as their birthday. Let's celebrate the good while we remember the bad.
