Many people talk about @kubernetesio as a means to level the playing field against @awscloud by standardizing applications and orchestration to a much more portable format.
There's something to this but ultimately it's an enabling technology. What's going to motivate organizations to pay the remainder of the switching cost?
IMHO @awscloud's achilles heel is the complete opacity around forecasting and managing spend at scale. Organizations waste a tremendous amount of time and money just trying to understand their last bill, let alone what it will be next quarter or in two years.
I believe that the first alternative cloud (@Azure, @googlecloud, etc) to go all-in on enabling users to truly understand and optimize their cloud spend will have a real shot taking back market share from @awscloud.
And @awscloud has made some minor and welcome improvements in Cost Explorer in the last 18-24 months, but they still fall well short of what their customers need. They should be investing more and moving faster here.
