I get the concerns that students are being coddled on campus (though don't really agree).
I understand the claim that there are increased mental health issues among students.
Just cannot see the argument for why there is a causal connection between the two.
Someone help me out folks: what am I missing here? Haidt & Lukianioff are connecting free speech policies to mental health (see thread below). This seems really...out there.
It seems really irresponsible to discuss free speech issues in one breath, and in the next talk about the rise of suicides. It certainly implies causation. Can @JonHaidt or @glukianoff or defenders explain what I am missing here?

Grover Norquist knows how marginal tax rates works. He and his organization has done more to shape our current tax system than perhaps anyone else.

The debate about campus speech is a lot easier to understand when you get that it is mostly driven by people who care neither about campus or speech, but instead dislike universities because they assume they foster liberal thought. And its not just the US.
Authoritarian Orban in Hungary not just shut down an independent university - the definition of state censorship. He is also obsessed with removing gender studies from higher education. 2/ edition.cnn.com/2018/10/19/eur…

Jazmine Headley went to a welfare office to get childcare vouchers so she could take a cleaning job. With no available chairs, she sat on the floor with her 1yr old. She was told to stand, refused. Then police came, yanked child away & arrested her. 1/ nytimes.com/2018/12/09/nyr…
Eyewitnesses said she was not blocking any entry way, but she is charged with obstruction. She is charged with endangering her child, even though it was the security officials and police who directly put the child in danger 2/

I've noticed in my conversations with Republicans/conservatives that their worldview often relates to *their* perspective. They've faced poverty, medical conditions, economic insecurity, racism/sexism, and countless other problems first hand. 1/
Their expression of things comes from that place. I say, "What about these people who cannot make ends meet?" and they might say, "I used to be one of them, but I worked my way out of it" or "I am working my way out of it". 2/
Those who are distinctly different, like immigrants, are likewise based in their perception of those people, often a projection of fear. That is, some of the immigrants are heinous criminals - the ones who aren't plan to burden our social welfare net. 3/

It’s #WorldMentalHealthDay, and I am so proud to live in a time where people are starting to be more open about their mental health issues — because it’s important to reduce stigma and it helps others not feel alone, but also, in my case, it’s important for me to say the words.
It helps me for many reasons. When I talk about living with bipolar disorder and alcoholism, I am able to own those parts of my life — those parts of who I am — and that makes them less scary and more manageable.
Talking about it also reminds me that I have to remember that I face those issues. It’s easy for me, at moments, to convince myself that I am leading a pretty awesome life and have “moved past” them. Spoiler alert: I haven’t.

2/ I think almost all founders struggle with these emotional issues-but there are so few that talk about it. Why? Fear of being the only one not “crushing it”, fear of what it will mean with potential investors/customers/employees, fear of not living up to expectations.

“Mental Illness” runs on both sides of my family,

I’ve seen people “cope” with for years, in a futile struggle

I’ve seen people overcome it, but it requires entirely remaking themselves
Separating internal mental health from external reality is as detrimental as separating mind from body

The factors that create mental pathology and self destruction are many

Redemption is found within
Mental health awareness is at an all time high,

The issue is not lack of awesnress,

The issue is a broken paradigm of how we address mental pathology in the first place
