@Peter_Fitz @smh IMHO funding to private schools should be decreased to 25% for three years, with NO capital expenditure loans / grants for the same three year period. This money should go directly into public schools. No ifs, buts or maybes. Should private schools want an increase from 25%, they
@Peter_Fitz @smh [2] must submit their current fees, show that (after the 3yr period) they haven’t increased them more than CPI, so parents haven’t been slogged for the difference. They’ve got more than enough profit to pay for the three year term without hiking their fees. They just won’t be
@Peter_Fitz @smh [3] able to build more stables, or a second theatre, or an observatory. But, hey, it means public schools will have air-conditioning, computers that work, their libraries funded by the school budget (incl having a qualified teacher-librarian), roofs that don’t leak. That, to me,
@Peter_Fitz @smh [4] is how we start to make the system a little more equal. Enough of this sh*t where the federal govt pays WAY more per private school student than public, and the onus is on the States. It’s unequal, and unjust, and inequitable. There are some exceptions, such as smaller church
@Peter_Fitz @smh [5] schools, HOWEVER, if they want public funds, then they should have to abide by public education rules. That means NOT discriminating because of someone’s gender, attraction to the same sex, or married to someone of the same sex. If they’re a Catholic, for example, that should
@Peter_Fitz @smh [6] be enough. It seems each school and church interprets the bible differently, when it comes to discriminating against staff & students, so there should be a blanket policy they have to abide by, in order to receive public funds. Their students need diversity too; they’re not
@Peter_Fitz @smh [7] living in a bubble, but in a non-denominational, multi-cultural, diverse community. Take religion out of state schools. Completely. If parents want their child to study religion, there’s Sunday schools, Youth groups, Bible study etc. Unless it’s studying comparative religion,
@Peter_Fitz @smh [8] such as how does w, x, y, & z view love & forgiveness; what are the basic tenets of the different faiths; what are similarities & differences between faiths; how & why people interpret their faith’s religious texts in different ways, so students have a broad understanding of
@Peter_Fitz @smh [9] different faith systems in their community, then any religious deity or dogma should be kept away from state schools. No special religious education, no chaplains, etc. Bring back professional support staff, not preachers. Our students deserve this, and more.
@Peter_Fitz @smh [10] Just in case anyone hasn’t done their own research and doesn’t realise just how HUGE the difference in funding is, and thinks this is being exaggerated...here’s just one example of a private school vs two state schools in the same area.
@Peter_Fitz @smh [11] I looked it up as my niece attends one of the state schools & they were having a fun run to raise money to update their sports fields. This is quite a new school, so it should’ve been in the initial design & build. Curious about schools in your area? myschool.edu.au
@Peter_Fitz @smh Begs the question. Why the HELL are so many parents (whose kids attend public schools) voting for the Coalition (and to a lesser extent Labor, since they haven’t stopped the gravy train either, or lessened it significantly) still?! They have the power to stop it, with their vote.
