Got this in a group I'm in that's composed of taxpaying citizens of Uganda. This is a letter from Seeta High School (mbu) to parents asking them to sponsor their children for educational (term used loosely in this context) trips to the UAE and France.
As a parent, I acknowledge the need for these extra-curricular activities as part of our children's education. However, I think the schools need to be a bit honest about these things. I asked a friend in the travel business what the cost of these trips would be.
First of all, he was shocked and disgusted that the school would charge that highly for these trips. It being an educational trip and one involving school children, there is no way that trip would cost that much, especially when large number discounts come into play.
He actually said the UAE trip DOES NOT COST MORE THAN 700 DOLLARS. The school circular says 1,800 dollars. Someone in the group postulated that the figure on the circular is a way of getting students to pay for the teachers as well. Not entirely far-fetched, methinks.
All in all, if this is true, this is daylight robbery. How dare a school make parents pay such exorbitant amounts, on top of the astronomical school fees they are already paying? And before you say, 'But this is for those who can afford it!", tell me, does that make it right?
In light of the bad press some private schools have been getting of late , this is just wrong. Anyone know a parent at Seeta High? Have they seen this? Is this letter real? And if yes, what are their thoughts on this? I hope this letter is a fake. If it isn't, Uganda Zaabu. #SMH
