A very emotional scene inside Dulles airport this morning when an 11 y/o, held by ICE for 6+ months, reunited with his mother & grandmother. He claimed asylum at the border and was detained, yet the mom was already living legally in VA. She sued the Trump administration & won.
Since this video has recieved a lot of attention, here’s some (albeit VERY limited) context according to Libre by Nexus, the company that represented the Honduran family and is partly responsible for their reunification. Keep reading because it gets WEIRD.
The boy and his grandmother presented themselves at a border entry point in California to seek asylum. They were separated after several days and he remained in custody for six months while Nexus secured the grandmother’s bond through its charitable arm after a few weeks.
The mother, who had already been living in Virginia as a legal asylum-seeker, says she complied with all requests from the government and sought Nexus’ help when her son still wasn’t released. They represented her pro bono, sued and were able to negotiate his release.
Why were there cameras ready at the airport? Bc Nexus put out a press release, which I would share but won’t because it includes details about the boy’s case that probably should have never been publicized. Nexus is primarily a for-profit immigration bonds services company...
... and as @BIKOINC flagged, it’s under investigation in three states for alleged fraudulent practices that exploit language barriers and undocumented immigrants' vulnerabilities. univision.com/univision-news…
That report also suggests Nexus leadership favors Republicans who support stricter immigration laws and protect the bail bonds industry. CEO Mike Donovan donated $5K to the GA gubernatorial candidate who embarked on the famous "deportation bus tour" dailycitizen.news/news/local_new…
(He's also donated to Democrats) WaPo reported in April that Nexus says it has "enjoyed explosive growth as the demand for immigration bonds has soared." In 2017 Donovan said their revenue exceeded $30 million. washingtonpost.com/local/investig…
On a random note, Donovan, who was at the airport for the reunification, reportedly became the caretaker for Zachary Cruz, the Parkland shooter’s brother, after Cruz bizarrely trespassed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School mere weeks after the massacre foxnews.com/us/2018/09/06/…
