1. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is set to meet with the president Thursday even as Christine Blasey Ford, Kavanaugh’s first accuser, is set to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee. This is not an accident.
2. Trump is trying to split out attention between two pivotal events. It might work, but we should remember that these two stories are linked.
3. Getting rid of the man who oversees the investigation into your campaign is part and parcel of installing a justice who might prevent you from being indicted by the same investigation.
4. Senators who honor the rule of law, or say they honor the rule of law, will be, or should be, under pressure to vote no on Kavanaugh should Rosenstein be fired.

1. Odds are the president is going to go on television tonigh to announce that he’s going to agree to reopen the government after 17 days of closure while simultaneously invoking national emergency powers allowing him to bypass Congress to start building a wall on the border.
2. If this happens, and it’s still an if, you’re going to hear plenty of people react in ways that range from concern to alarm to fear to outright panic. Some will accuse Donald Trump of trying to be an American dictator.
3. Others will argue, I think correctly, that the president is abusing the constitutional powers of his office, reinforcing the claim that he’s unfit to rule and sending him one further step toward removal.

1. @billscher touches a conventional wisdom that I keep chewing on. "Loyalists always seem satisfied ... so long as he is fighting. Winning has been secondary." I said the same two weeks ago, but the longer this shutdown goes on, the more I think the wall really matters.
2, If fighting were all that mattered, he would have caved already, no? If the wall really matters, then this could go on for a long--long--time. I guess we'll see.

1. The impeachment debate has entered a new phase, it seems. A new focus is on cost-benefit analysis. The thinking is Donald Trump is so out of control and so dangerous that the country must not wait to get rid of him.
2. Elizabeth Drew, whom I adore, wrote about this just before the New Year. She wrote: “the evident dangers of keeping an out-of-control president in office might well impel politicians in both parties, not without controversy, to want to make a deal to get him out of there.”
3. On Saturday came @DLeonhardt’s turn. The Times columnist, whom I also adore, wrote that, “waiting is too dangerous. The cost of removing a president from office is smaller than the cost of allowing this president to remain.”
