In the summer, I was definitely on Pogba's side. Didn't think Mourinho gave the player the praise he deserved for the World Cup, instead being too keen to deflect criticism away from himself over why Pogba played better for France than United.
That's not to say he offered no praise but comments about Pogba being more committed to France were unnecessary, but expected, given Mourinho can't ever take responsibility for any of his own flaws when it comes to getting the best out of his players. It's always their fault.
That said, Mourinho has kissed Pogba's arse since then. Made him vice-captain, defended him against all the criticism of being inconsistent. He's bought two players to bring out the best in him. Changed tactics to 4-3-3. He's done his bit to fix things.
In response, Pogba has thrown it all back in Mourinho's face. After the very first game of the season he said he would be fined if he told the truth, having gone to the mixed zone (something he rarely/never does) explicitly just to stir shit.
In the second game of the season he was awful, booting the ball all over the park to no one. Then, on the back of his agent talking Barca, Pogba went on international duty and continued to pile on the pressure, only managing to commit his future to United for the next few months.
Having already questioned his own attitude (just two games in), Pogba criticises Mourinho's tactics after the Wolves game. Fans can say "he's right!" and he is, but that's a conversation for the training ground, not the world's media.
After Keano slagged his teammates off on MUTV, I don't think there was anyone who disagreed with what he said. But there were plenty, Ferguson included, who disagreed with him airing United's laundry in public. There's a time and a place for it.
Pogba has gone on about how much he loves the club and maybe, as a product of the youth team, he genuinely does. But there can't seriously be anyone who believes he's putting the club first here. He's creating drama for his own benefit so that he can leave.
Pogba is a brilliant player but, on average, he's just been OK. There's more chance of him having a future at the club than Mourinho though. But if the next manager doesn't kiss his arse enough (too little too late from Mourinho?), then what? All of this nonsense again? No ta.
Chances are neither Mourinho nor Pogba will be at United next season, so all of this debate is meaningless. But the idea that Pogba's failings are all Mourinho's fault is nonsense. Both have fallen way short of expectations and both should take responsibility for that.
Seen several people saying "Well Mourinho calls out the players, so why can't Pogba call out him?" Er, because Mourinho is the manager. There's a hierarchy. And Pogba isn't at the top of it, as much as he likes to think he is.
I don't agree with Mourinho's style of criticising players publicly so often. I think it's shit in fact. But he is still the manager and it's not an equal partnership. It's not a democracy. The manager is top dog.
Sir Alex Ferguson said it best.
