The culture of "house parties," where Brett Kavanaugh allegedly assaulted girls in high school, was described in a memoir by Mark Judge, one of Kavanaugh's best friends at Georgetown Prep. The memoir is called "Wasted," and the following are passages from it, chronologically.
The first significant reference to high school drinking and girls comes on page 34, where Judge describes drinking as "one of the major forms of recreation at Prep."
Later on that same page, Judge writes that seniors would go straight from class to a bar (the drinking age was 18 at the time).
On page 42, Judge writes about "beach week," the start of the summer when boys and girls from private schools in his area would rent houses in Ocean City or Rehoboth. Judge describes beach week as a "bacchanalia of drinking and sex, or at least attempts at sex."
"Beach week" is specifically mentioned in the latest allegation of assault from Julie Swetnick, who says Kavanaugh engaged in "abusive and physically aggressive behavior toward girls" at beach week in Ocean City. On page 48, Judge writes this about a beach week party:
This passage, on page 49, is very strange: "We lit each other's underwear on fire, had beer fights, and barfed in the sink. A couple of guys took pictures of their penises."
Before I continue, I should note that I've spent the past week immersed in this book and other material related to Kavanaugh's time at Georgetown Prep and his friendship with Judge. Here's the first story I wrote, which was published over the weekend: theintercept.com/2018/09/22/mar…
And yesterday I wrote this story about Judge's centrality to figuring out what Kavanaugh did in high school. theintercept.com/2018/09/25/bre…
Judge boasted on page 50 of his memoir that "if you could breathe and walk at the same time, you could hook up with someone" at beach week.
Judge did not use real names in the book, so there's no mention of Brett Kavanaugh. But there is a reference to "Bart O'Kavanaugh" getting drunk and vomiting and passing out in a car. It's on page 52.
You might wonder how these high school kids were able to rent houses in a resort town without adults around. Judge explains how they got an Ocean City rental in the summer of 1981:
In the wealthy Maryland suburbs where most of these students lived, hosting a house party was known as "popping," and it would be done when parents weren't around. The following is from page 68.
Julie Swetnick alleges Kavanaugh and Judge harassed and assaulted girls at these house parties. "On numerous occasions at these parties, I witnessed Mark Judge and Brett Kavanaugh drink excessively and engage in highly inappropriate conduct," she stated. Here's her statement:
Christine Blasey Ford says Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her at a house party as Judge watched and laughed. Here's her advance testimony, in which she states, "People were drinking beer in a small living room ... Brett and Mark were visibly drunk." assets.documentcloud.org/documents/4945…
A final note on the drinking culture at Georgetown Prep. Kavanaugh and Judge, on the football team together, cryptically referenced "100 Kegs" on their senior yearbook pages. Judge explained in "Wasted" that 100 kegs was the team's target for beer consumption (page 117).
