One reason Democrats had to quickly manufacture absurdly sloppy allegations to follow up Ford was herding their followers into compliance. A week of just picking away at Ford's story would have left too many fair-minded Dem-leaners uncertain of Kav's guilt.
But once the Democrat clown car opened up and wild, lurid allegations began flying, it became almost impossible to be a Democrat and believe Kav might be innocent. The peer pressure around the proverbial water cooler became overwhelming.
A week of talking about just Ford and you've got some moderate Dem voters saying, "You know, she doesn't have any evidence and parts of her story don't add up." Throw in a blizzard of bullshit allegations and even moderate Dems would get flamed by their friends for saying that.
At this point you've got Democrat voters who will tell you with a straight face, "There's no way ALL of these allegations could be false. He must be guilty of SOMETHING." The media is helping, not calling Dems out for sloppy smear jobs. In short: classic witch hunt tactics. /end
