I'm a sociologist who studies adolescent sexual violence. On this thread, I will be live tweeting the #Kavanaugh hearing, chiming in with sociological insights and research findings.
Full disclosure--I will probably step away for parts of it. While many conservatives have cast feminists as people who rejoice at allegations of sexual assault against powerful men, this is a painful process for us. We know survivors. We are survivors. And I will need breaks.
It does not bode well that the beginning of this hearing is starting with equating #Kavanaugh and #Ford's experiences with harassment following Dr. Ford's allegations. They are absolutely not the same.

Women know what a shitshow we’re in for if we come forward and we know it’s exponentially worse with a powerful man involved

We do not need people protecting us from ourselves when we are trying to protect other women at cost to ourselves
Like, it isn’t only Congressional Dems who saw what happened to Hill. We all did. And if we were too young you bet we learn about it at some point anyway.

These are things women discuss and weigh out and it isn’t up to anyone but us to decide what’s “safe” in this men’s world.
(Not like there is a “safe” anyway: come forward and maybe ruin your life and prospects, or don’t and watch the man in question ruin other lives and prospects.

We aren’t left with “safe” options when men decide we only exist as NPCs.)

#Women have much greater #hormonal fluctuations each month than #men do. Simply put, a woman's thought life and #emotions are more prone to high highs, and low lows. This isn't a "design flaw" but rather how #God made a #woman to be in touch with the needs of small #children.
Nothing is more short-sighted as a #man than viewing a #woman as an "overly emotional" or "flawed" version of a man's thought process or #emotions. A woman that does not let her emotions out will become very #passiveaggressive, #depressed or #angry. Your job is to be an #outlet.
