@soledadobrien I have been saying this for years. The leaders of the Civil Rights Movement did not have hope; they had no reason to believe things would ever be different. They didn't have precedent: they were fighting against the way things were and always had been.
@soledadobrien They couldn't vote their representatives out: they were fighting for the RIGHT to vote. All they had was steely resolve: the will to sacrifice themselves and bend the moral arc of the universe towards justice.

My sister Sam met Barry when she was 15. He had muscles and a motorcycle and she got pregnant and dropped out of high school. At 17 she had two kids, no education, and an abusive husband. And she thought to herself:

So, while working at the post office and taking care of two kids, she went to night school and got her G.E.D. "This is a start" she thought, "but I can STILL do better for myself."
@JillianBerman Still working at the post office, she went back to school (again) and got a Masters in Education. This was impetus enough to leave the abusive husband, who by now she'd long outgrown. "This is good" she thought, "but I still know what I'm capable of."

The popular imagination "schoolbook" version of the Civil Rights Movement is that MLK appeared in Montgomery & led a bus boycott, which started a protest cycle that culminated in "I Have A Dream" & the VRA. /1
The Golden Age narrative obfuscates organizing work of everyday people through the brutal Jim Crow south & the falsely "colorblind" North of the 1920s-50s. There were countless efforts to organize black political power from the farmhands of the west coast to the NYC boroughs. /2
This classical framing of the "golden age of the civil rights movement" ignores a lot of what led to the passage of the VRA: 1st, decades of work done by communists that laid down the roots of the movement in the deep south of the 1930s. /3

Listen to how they qualify the Civil Rights movement.

Starting at around 3:10, they define the protests of the Civil Rights Movement as refusing to obey a law, but don't believe it functioned to challenge the legitimacy of a regime.
They define an "idolatrous" regime as being "against or for (respectively) the things the church cannot do."

How, then, would the Jim Crow era government of lynching, segregation, and violent white racism at all levels of government not be defined as an "idolatrous regime."
You can literally hear Tim Keller localizing agreement as the systemic violent White Supremacy of the United States during the Jim Crow era is glossed over almost entirely.

They are literally separating the laws being disobeyed from those who enforce them.
