What we have to do re rapid move out of coal, and then oil & gas is ensure workers in those industries don’t feel they have to bear the brunt of it- pensions, re-trained, new industry etc. Migration: Need opportunity for sustainable livelihoods eg in Africa #IBARome
The EU countries must share and spread the burden of migration- Italy & Greece, & also Spain, have disproportionate burden. Describes people in Jordan having a more neighbourly response to extensive refugee influx from Syria. #IBARome
Thrilled Dutch CA upheld Urgenda #climatechange appeal. Believe abt 1000 cases around the world, although some seek the opposite direction. About 6 very significant legal cases which can cut through political delay/inertia. Eg Philippines Human Rights Commission case #IBARome

If that’s a thing, I think it is a fitting description of Theresa May.

Some thoughts on why, for all the spectacle of being a lone figure battling on all sides, May does not deserve a nation’s sympathy. /1
All throughout this process, and Brexit is very a much a process (to which I will return), there have been a series of choices. At each turn, May has made very poor choices.

It is those choices which have led us to the precipice on which we sit as a nation today. /2
Of those choices, to my mind, it is the failure of transparency which has had the most serious ramifications.

Indeed, it can’t even be described as a failure of transparency.

It was a conscious choice in May’s part to keep reality cloaked in darkness during her premiership. /3

1/36 *nerd hat on* As a perpetual student of history + geography, the growth of hyperbolic doomsday journalism on #climatechange/#globalwarming is really, really irritating to me. I also find it deeply irresponsible. History teaches a lot of lessons that this journalism skips.
2/36 The doomsday journalism is of a type – breathless predictions of terror, a black + white of everything, + we’ve never faced this. This journalism overwhelms people into being unable to plan. That is irresponsible itself, especially for figuring out how to handle it.
3/36 Some of this is because people, especially in the US, love being Cassandra. We also have the privilege now of knowing what’s going on. But it is also irresponsible to not consider climate change as an extreme version of a long cycle of humans fucking shit up.

1. Let's talk about the effects of #climatechange on the world's forests, with a focus on the northwest of Canada. This is also about electoral #greenwash, and my duty as public servant and right as private Canadian citizen to speak freely about what I know.
2. Why am I compelled to speak? How am I free to speak? The answer is in the federal Values and Ethics Code of Coduct (VECC).
3. It can be career-limiting to criticize government policy when you work for government. Duty of Loyalty is very, very important. However, as VECC makes clear, it is not absolute. In fact SCoC has ruled twice in favour of citizen free speech as a higher ideal. In 1985 and 2001.

I've been thinking about this lately -- not the precise subject @EricHolthaus addresses here ("climate grief") but more the "quiet panic" about #climatechange I saw @matthewstoller refer to earlier today. <thread>
2. The @IPCC_CH report earlier this month revising estimates for how much time was left to restrain the pace of global temperature rise sent this feeling into overdrive, for me and many other people. It's not just that we have less time than we thought.
3. It's that we're dead in the water, as far as policy responses that might make a significant dent in carbon emissions are concerned. Not only is US political leadership acting like people who don't worry about climate change because they expect to be dead before it hits.

The @UN has just released its most detailed report on #climatechange.

The short version: unless we can limit temperature rise to 1.5C, we are all screwed.
The report details two scenarios:

1.5C hotter, and 2C hotter. These are set out in the Paris climate treaty, where nations agreed to limit temperature rises to "well below" 2C and to 1.5C if at all possible.

The two are not the same futures.

1. I happened to listen to @NPR for a few hours this morning, and I heard three stories that are very much connected to #climatechange without anyone on the radio mentioning climate change even once.

It was surreal and disturbing.

2. The first story was about the current drought in Oregon. It focused on a rancher who is currently paying to have 18,000 gallons of water a day trucked in to water his livestock. (Yes, you read that right.)
3. The story discussed how much this water and its transport was costing the rancher; how long this drought has affected ranching in the West; and what the ranchers might do if the weather doesn't eventually return to normal (as if it would one day return to normal).
