This is a fascinating read from Dexter Filkins: newyorker.com/magazine/2018/…
It includes incredible backstory on the infamous @nytimes story: "Investigating Donald Trump, FBI Sees No Clear Link to Russia" nytimes.com/2016/11/01/us/…
Rather than a scoop about a potential link between Alpha Bank and the Trump campaign, which it was originally intended to be, it will forever be remembered as the story that misled the public about the state of the investigation into Trump campaign ties to Russia.
For more details on how the server story played out behind the scenes in October 2016, @FranklinFoer's piece this week is also a must-read: theatlantic.com/politics/archi…
Of course, he published a story on the Alpha Bank-Trump Org connection at the time and got massive blowback for it: slate.com/articles/news_…
.@FranklinFoer: "I have grown empathetic to the Times’s decision not to publish the Lichtblau story...That the paper yields to prudence, & sometimes refrains from gratuitous risks, bolsters its authority when it publishes huge scoops about Weinstein, or Trump’s finances."
But he notes that the Filkins' piece includes this quote from Dean Baquet:

“If I were the reporter, I would have wanted to run it, too. It felt like there was something there.”
