October 31 was a pivotal day in the 2016 presidential campaign—and of failure for the mainstream media.

The Clinton campaign released a statement about a mysterious server registered to Trump Tower the Trump org that was using to communicate with Russia. #TrumpRussia
That evening, Hillary Clinton gave a speech in which she warned that Trump’s business ties to Russia may have something to do with Russian efforts to help get him elected...

“Why would Putin be trying to get Donald Trump elected president?” Clinton said. “Could it be because...he has promised to adopt pro-Kremlin policies? Or maybe because of the extensive business dealings with Russian oligarchs with ties to Putin?" (Oct. 31, 2016) #TrumpRussia
There was little serious media inquiry into #TrumpRussia at the time. Three days earlier, Comey sent a letter to Congress saying additional Clinton emails had been found (duplicates of emails the FBI had already examined, turned out); that sucked up all the media’s attention.
The same day she put out the statement on the #TrumpRussia server, the New York Times—which two days earlier ran a front page story on emails—ran a story on connections between Trump & Russia: “Investigating Donald Trump, FBI Sees No Clear Link to Russia”

The NYT got it wrong; as they reported later, the FBI knew of links between the Trump campaign and Russia by July 2016. After hacked DNC emails leaked, the Australians told the FBI about Trump adviser George Papadopoulos’ communications with Russians.

Since March 2016, Papadopoulos had been communicating with a professor tied to the Kremlin, who in April told him Russia had hacked emails that could hurt Clinton. Wikileaks began putting out the hacked DNC emails they had obtained from Russia two months later. #TrumpRussia
Trump was still negotiating with Russia on the Trump Tower Moscow project in June 2016, yesterday’s court documents and Michael Cohen’s testimony revealed. The infamous Trump Tower meeting with a Russian lawyer for “dirt on Hillary Clinton” also took place that month.#TrumpRussia
BuzzFeed reported that Cohen even spoke to Putin aides about giving a $50 million penthouse atop Trump Tower Moscow to Putin. #TrumpRussia

On Jan. 11, 2017, prior to his swearing in, Trump tweeted out the following lie:

“Russia has never tried to use leverage over me. I HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH RUSSIA - NO DEALS, NO LOANS, NO NOTHING!"

Oct. 31 was not the first time Hillary suggested Putin was helping Trump due in part to business ties; she brought it up at the second presidential debate on Oct. 9 as well.

“We’ve never been in a position where an adversary is working so hard to influence the outcome of an election. And believe me, they’re not doing it to get me elected. They’re doing it to try to influence the election for Donald Trump,” she said at the Oct. 9 debate. #TrumpRussia
Much of what Hillary Clinton suggested regarding Russia came to pass. The Clinton team was frustrated in the closing weeks that the mainstream media largely failed to seriously report on questions about #TrumpRussia. With each new revelation, it seems they were justified. hill
